These are a set of stories written by Vaseem Khan and set in modern day Mumbai.  The first book in the series The Unexpected Inheritance of Inspector Chopra introduces both ex-Inspector Ashwin Chopra, who has just retired from the Mumbai police as well as the baby elephant, Ganesha, who is sent to him by an uncle.

Chopra sets up his own detective agency and accompanied by his little elephant he starts to solve cases.  Ganesha is cute and adds some lightness to the stories, but I would not describe them as cosy, because Mumbai is accurately portrayed and the issues that are involved are very real.  Chopra visits both the modern high rise buildings and the slums and the contrasts within the city are very clear.

There are five novels in the series, plus two novellas.  I enjoyed them all, both for the stories and for the insight into life in Mumbai.
