This year we decided we'd celebrate Thinking Day a little differently.  Instead of activities from a different country we decided we'd concentrate on the part of the Brownie promise which says 'I promise .. to serve my community'.

I arranged for a speaker to come in from Gloucestershire Bundles, a local charity.  They provide clothes for children from age 0 to 13, plus essentials for babies, and provisions for mothers-to-be and new mothers.  These are for families who are in need for various reasons - house fire, low income/difficulty getting benefits, domestic violence etc.  The families can be single parent (either mother or father), two parents or any other combination, and need to be referred to benefit.  Referrals can come from social workers, health visitors, schools, and even churches or Brownie packs.  They accept donations of good quality second-hand clothes, plus toiletries, toys, games and equipment.  They also buy new goods where appropriate.

Stacey talked to the girls about what the charity does, and got them to consider how important different things were to them.  This led to some intelligent discussions, such as 'is a mobile phone necessary' when it might be the only means of getting help.  The Brownies were clearly inspired and when we asked them if they'd like to support the charity they all agreed.

We discussed possible fund-raising events, and two of the suggestions were a cake sale and a book sale.  So last night, following our enrolment

we held a sale, to which families were invited to come.  It was a great success.  The Brownies enjoyed it, the families contributed (and some also donated clothing and toiletries), the few left over books were donated to Bundles and I took home the cakes which were left.  And we raised £25 which was excellent.

I think this was a lovely thing to do with the Brownies.

What a great idea! And good on the girls and their parents for being such willing participants. Lovely that you made such a nice amount for the charity.

Books and sweets? Pity I'm so far away, or I would have SO been there!

And hurray for a successful fundraiser for a good cause.
