Something New (No 1)

I could have chosen a number of things for my first Something New challenge: the drama workshop earlier this month, our visit to Cambridge (which I shall be blogging about for the next couple of days), but instead I'm going with something corvidology  suggested.  That is writing an explicit in-character sex scene for one of my OTPs.

It's not as explicit as some people write, but I think it is very in character for Lucas North in my "Through The Year" series.  May Bank Holiday

Well done! I really do believe the "in character" part is the most important element anyway so this works really well with North's reluctance.

Well done! I have mixed feeling about writing sex scenes. I don't like fade-to-black at the bedroom door, but at the same time I don't like too much explicit detail. So I find it hard to write!

I'll happily fade to black, mainly because the sex scene isn't relevant to what I'm writing. And anything especially explicit feels like sex by numbers to me, which is why this particular scene worked for me - the sex was there, but a lot of it involved Lucas' feelings and hangups.

I agree about the sex by numbers! I even skim it in books I'm reading. I suppose that, like skimming battle scenes, is one reason I find it hard to write... I agree about needing to involve the feelings and hangups - I want the emotional connection rather than the physical one. So I don't often write explicit sex unless it really does further the plot or part of the plot. I couldn't write erotica to save my life!
