Swan Lake (Matthew Bourne): The Prince #075 Snap

The prince had had the best night of his life.  It had started off as the worst and he had thought of drowning in the municipal lake, but then the swan had appeared, and they had danced, and his life had been made over.  Now he was forced to attend a reception and on top of that the apparent stranger, his swan, was ignoring him.   How could life turn against him once more; the brilliant whiteness of the swan become the darkness of the stranger.  He felt as though his mind had both exploded and imploded at the same time.

Baby Ganesh Agency: Coming Home #038 welcome

“Have you had a good day?” Poppy called out, as her husband returned that evening.

“Rather frustrating, I’m afraid,” Chopra replied, before realising she wasn’t speaking to him.

Ganesha, the little elephant, was waving his trunk, apparently explaining how his day had gone.

“He stole some chocolate again,” Chopra said.

“It’s entirely your fault,” Poppy replied.  “He’s only a little elephant.  How can you expect him to resist temptation?”

Chopra snorted.  “Shouldn’t you welcome me home first?”

“I didn’t see you trotting up the road towards me.”  Poppy leant over and kissed him.  “Nevertheless, I am glad to see you.”

Caroline, or Change: Not Just A Maid #033 raised

Caroline thought carefully as she wrote to her daughter.  She found reading and writing difficult, and she would have to ask Dotty how to spell some of the words.  Not that she thought Emmie would spend that long reading it, such was the way of the young, but she would be proud to read how Jackie had done in his exams and how he was going to college.

Caroline smiled.  She was proud of all the children she had raised.  She may just have been a maid, but it wasn’t ‘just’, her earnings had enabled them to achieve so much.

Violet: A Different Fix #018 fix

“And to think I once believed a preacher like that would fix my face,” Violet said.  She waved the newspaper whose headlines shouted the downfall of yet another television preacher.

“You were desperate and did what you could,” Flick replied.  “And if you hadn’t travelled to see him, we’d never have met.”

“Funny, isn’t it, the way things turn out.  Look at Monty, happily married to the nurse he met when he was brought back from ‘Nam.”

“Yeah, took him a while to accept his injuries were never going to be properly fixed.  And now he’s a real doting dad.”

The Little Drummer Girl: Reunion #005 away

“Kurtz warned me to stay away from you,” Charlie said to Gadi Becker.

“It would appear you treated this warning in the same way as you’ve treated all his other warnings,” Gadi replied.

“He never told me the truth.  He never trusted me with the truth.  So when he said it was better that you’d gone away, I knew it wasn’t true either.”

“So you came to find me.”  Cautiously, Gadi put his arms around her.

“I came to see if I had been mistaken in how I saw you.”

“And were you?”

Charlie leaned in and kissed him.  “No!”

Timon of Athens: The Truth? #076 scratch

Timon scratched at the ground, searching for more roots.  “You’re back, now you’ve heard I’ve found gold.”

“Do you think I can be bought now, when I couldn’t be bought then?” Apemantus replied.

“I was never buying,” Timon said.

“Are you sure?  It’s said everything has its price, and you proved that well enough.  Throw sufficient gold at something and the solution is yours: debtors released, marriage partners secured.”

“You do not understand.”  Timon returned to her scratching.

“I understand human nature far better than you.  You do not wish to understand, it was always easier to purchase the answer.”

La Boheme: A Missed Chance #055 chance

“You go on, I’ll catch you up,” Rodolfo said.

“What’s so urgent you have to work on Christmas Eve?”

“I need to finish this article.  I can’t miss any chance to be published.  You never know who might read it and commission me to write a whole series.”

“Who with that money is reading articles at this time of year?  Only the poor who have nothing better to do.”

“Okay, you’ve convinced me.  We’re not poor, we’re going to celebrate. I’ll come with you.”

Rodolfo left.

Minutes later, Mimi, cold, coughing and her candle blown out, knocked on the door.

Company: Realisation #070 settle

Did she want to settle down?  Not if she was honest.  Not yet.  Maybe never.  Maybe she could be a serial settler, like Joanne.  But was that really settled, or just accepting the best for the moment, before the better came along?  Bobbie smiled.  Maybe it suited Joanne to maintain that appearance, when in reality she, like the others, was quite content in how they were settled.  Perhaps that was the key: none of them were settled in the conventional way, yet all were happy.  So why couldn’t she be settled as a single?

I am happy as I am!

Pride and Prejudice: Darcy’s thoughts #036 birth

His first thoughts contained words which could not be used in the company of ladies, and indeed, would cause surprise were he with those of his own sex.  He set off briskly, letting his rapid paces defuse some of the anger.  Rejected by Miss Elizabeth Bennett.  And such a total rejection, without acknowledgement of all that he could offer her.  Were he to propose to one of innumerable others, he would be accepted instantly by those who would sieze the benefits he had known from birth.  Despite himself, he gave a rueful smile.  Part of Miss Bennett’s attraction was because she could not be bought.  Maybe he had assumed too much; he’d certainly never even considered the possibility she would reject him.  That hurt, but it was his own damned fault.  But what truly hurt was her accusations about Wickham.  Yet, as a gentleman, he could not tell her the truth.  And even if he did, would she believe him?  Probably not, she was so clearly set against him.

Retrieving his horse, he mounted, and as soon as it was safe to do so, spurred him into a gallop.

A Bear Called Paddington: The Marmalade Sandwich #062 brilliant

Carrying a spare marmalade sandwich in one’s hat was a brilliant idea, Paddington thought.  Then, he raised his hat to the gentleman coming in the opposite direction, and the sandwich fell out.  Instantly, Paddington dropped to his knees, intent on rescuing the sandwich.  Unfortunately, the gentleman stepped on it.

“Oh!” said Paddington.

The gentleman took a couple of further steps, before he stopped, aware the sandwich was stuck to his foot.

“Bear!” growled Mr Curry.

Paddington stood up.  “Sorry, Mr Curry,” he said.  “My brilliant idea didn’t work quite as I’d intended.”

Mr Curry peeled the sandwich off his shoe.

LOL that it was Mr Curry who stepped on the sandwich. :D

I also liked the one with Mr Darcy. Very believable line of thinking, given the circumstances.

Congratulations! I too was most taken with the marmalade sandwich. I have not yet seen Paddington, though of course I am very familiar with the books. However, I have it on my Amazon Prime list of things to watch and will be looking out for marmalade and hats.
