Being away a fortnight ago, I missed the first week of Brownies, but was able to go last week to find three new Brownies, Glitter Owl (our previous leader-in-training, now qualified) no longer there and her daughter has transferred pack (probably inevitable, but I think it would have been better for her to stay and do things away from her mother) and our new leader-in-training now named Flamingo.

While those Brownies who are going on Pack Holiday were busy doing pre-holiday preparations, Flamingo and I worked with the ones who were unable to go for various reasons plus the youngest ones.  Locally there is a scarecrow trail, and we were responsible for dressing our scarecrow.  The theme this year is royalty, and the Brownies had voted for the Queen.  So we dressed her in an old Brownie hoodie, suitable material for a skirt, and a deep red velour towel (having removed the charity shop sale tag).  Surprisingly enough she looked quite impressive.

This week was the parents' evening for those Brownies on Pack Holiday, so I had agreed to lead the activity for the Brownies.

And then, on Tuesday afternoon I had a phone call from The Daughter, who is waiting for an operation.  They'd got a cancellation, could I pick her up after the op on Thursday.  No problem, rapid call to work to sort having Thursday off (they're very accommodating) and text to Doodles saying I won't be at Brownies.  She texts back to say can I drop off the instructions for this week's activities since I've got the only copy - and I say yes, and agree to pass them to someone else who's closer to my home.  Also hurriedly write [community profile] fan_flashworks entry.

Wednesday, I work through all my essential work, rescheduling stuff to next week.  I visit my mother (don't make any mention of upcoming op), drop off Brownie material arrive home.  Phone call from TD - operation now rescheduled for following Thursday.  Phone work, text Doodles.  Breathe sigh of relief.

Meanwhile, Doodles had arranged for Flamingo to lead the session, which I was quite happy about.  However, the person bringing the material doesn't arrive until late (she's helping at Pack Holiday so was coming for the meeting).  So I start running the session from what I can remember.  It was fine - Flamingo ran the second part and between us we ran the games.

The activity was called the Museum of the Imagination.  Step one, explain the meaning of the word 'imagination' to seven year old Brownies, being extremely grateful they were happy to admit they didn't know the meaning.  The idea was that in pairs the Brownies would be given an every day object and they had to invent a story behind it which would justify why that object should be included in the museum.  I made sure our newest Brownies all worked with an older girl and we let them loose with the objects.  Some of them came up with some really imaginative stories and everyone took part.  Some were less keen on telling the group why their item was important, but they'd been involved in the planning.  And what really pleased me was that one Brownie, who would have been in tears a few months ago at the thought of speaking out, actually had the confidence to do so.

I see what you mean about having a confusing week! I hope your daughter is ok, and that her op goes smoothly.

As for the "museum" activity - that sounds really creative and fun! If you have time, would love to hear an example of an item that was used, and what those Brownies had to say about it. :D
