Local walks (Part 3)

Living near the canal, and with various small streams around there are a number of water birds around.

Although we don't often see the heron:



There are plenty of ducks:

 

There are also moorhens - although the nest didn't last long:

 

There are two different moorhens living along the bank:

Oooh! I love ducks! Of course, it's great to see photos of herons, moorhens and swans too. I'm impressed that you were able to get that picture of a nest.

I like ducks too. The nest really wasn't in a sensible position though. I was very surprised to see the eggs.

Ooh, birdies! I don't think swans have returned here yet (they don't usually stay the winter in Finland, they fly to slightly warmer regions), but we have plenty of ducks, too! I love watching them in the water.

We're fortunate we have swans all year round. Last summer where I work there was a whole family with six cygnets.

And we have lots of ducks - my husband went for a walk this evening and same a mother duck with 15 ducklings.

I have a very soft spot for moorhens, and coots! I love their big webbed feet.

I like moorhens and coots too! Many, many years ago, when I was living and working in London I use to walk across Hyde Park on the way to work and spot the moorhens and coots on the way.

I’m having my HS students look for wildlife around them. It’s nice seeing the critters near you. I didn’t realize mallard ducks were in the UK, too.

Oh yes, mallards are the most common ducks here.

Lovely! We usually see those in a park not too far away but it would mean driving and then the car park is closed, so not this year! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you. Yes, we're fortunate this is all within a few minutes walk of our house.
