Local walks (Part 6)

Today's photos come from a slightly different viewpoint - same canal just slightly spots:

   

The female swan in on a nest and hard to see, her partner was a bit further along the canal:

 

Earlier in the month I photographed some fish.  Firstly sticklebacks in a stream (they're the little black marks):

 

And some bream in the canal:

Yes - I am aware there are only so many photos of one canal one can take, but it is lovely by it at the moment. Glad you liked the photos :)

Yes, it is peaceful. We are very fortunate in where we live.

Great photos! I especially like the ones of the swans, though these are all really good. The ones with the bream also turned out really nicely. :-)

Thank you very much. I'm delighted you liked the two of the swans. I'm hoping to get pictures of the cygnets later in the summer. I took lots of the bream - I wasn't sure how well they'd come up, but some of them I was very pleased with.

I particularly love the very first photo - it's a very pretty composition.

And I'm kind of jealous that you're actually able to see fish in your canal ^____^ The canal I live by must have something in it I suppose, for the ducks and moorhens to live off, but the water isn't that clear. But then, I am generally only seeing it from the bridge.

Thank you - there are some spots where the view really is picturesque.

I've only ever seen the fish in the canal once - I'm not sure SM would have believed I'd seen so many if I hadn't taken the photos. At the moment the water is very clear, but I suspect this won't last.

Yes, it's lovely to know she's there, and practically impossible to photograph her.

That's a gorgeous walk and great photo opportunity. I am loving your pictures of the canal. And you're so lucky to get such a close view of the swans and the nest.

Thank you. I'm glad you are enjoying them. Hopefully later in the summer I shall be able to get pictures of the cygnets.

The canal is very straight. Was this one man made or a modified natural river?

Entirely man-made. The Severn River is slightly further to the west and runs through Gloucester, but is tidal up to Gloucester so having a canal made transport much easier. The river at low tide falls to less than a metre, at high tide is over eight metres, so you can see the value of the canal.

Great photos. Look at all those fish. The canal must be fairly clean healthy water. That's such a good sign.

Thank you. Although I've seen the sticklebacks before, I've only ever seen the bream once - I think they're generally further down in the water. It is a really good sign so many are living there.

Lovely! A friend in Salisbury has been posting photos of swans there on FB. Here, we've been keeping watch for a heron that is eyeing a neighbour's fish pond!

Thank you. I got a grainy photo of the cygnets today, so no doubt I will post that at some point.

I'm sure the heron thinks the fish in the pond are fair game.
