Having begun my series of Local Places with the Gloucester to Sharpness Canal, it seems appropriate that the final post of the series should be Gloucester Docks.

Gloucester Docks was constructed to be the terminus of the canal and first opened in 1827.  It is not far from the River Severn, part of which runs closeby.

A number of warehouses were built around the docks, to cope with the increasing volume of trade throughout the nineteenth century.

With all the equipment necessary for lifting the goods from the vessels.

During the twentieth century larger vessels and greater use of road transport meant that the traditional use of the docks declined.  In the last twenty years most of the warehouses have been repurposed as office buildings and residential properties.

As well as leisure boating.  In addition there are businesses involved with renovation of various tall ships, and there have been a number of tall ships festivals held in the docks.
