The Friday Five: Languages
Oct. 15th, 2022 02:58 pm1. How many languages do you speak?
One, although I have a smattering in two or three others.
2. What is your mother tongue?
English.
3. What is a language you would like to learn and why?
Any language when I'm about to visit a country.
4. Does it bother you when people speak a language you don't know in front of you? Why or why not?
If I'm in their country then I rather expect people to do so.
5. Speak to me.
I thought I had been.
Like many I've found that trying a few words in the language of the country I'm in always helps. In France in May we ordered our food in a mixture of French and English (depending on who knew what in which language). I've bought cake in a Flemish speaking Belgian bakery by speaking German. And my latest language attempt was welcoming two Argentinian visitors to a Church of Scotland church in Fort William in Spanish.
