Sherlock looked at his phone. “The instructions say <Come Quietly>. There are two quiet carriages on this train. I will check first class and, John, you can do the second class one. You’ll find it at the far end of the train.”
John set off towards the front of the train. It was typical of Sherlock to choose to try the Diogenes Club on rails and therefore make him walk all the way through the train. No doubt when he got there he’d find an old lady tutting because he was walking too noisily.
As he approached the door to carriage A he heard the wheels squealing loudly and felt the train juddering as the brakes were forcibly applied. He had no time to brace himself before he lurched forward as the train came to a sudden halt. However the blow he sustained to the back of his head had nothing to do with the unexpected stop and considerably more with a tall man holding a cricket bat.
He was therefore unaware of the train manager’s announcement that there had been an object left on the line and they would resume the journey as soon as possible.
