I'm just back from a short tour which looked at the WWII evacuation of Dunkirk and Hitler's Fortress Europe. The photos I share will be reflecting on what happened to the everyday men and women and remembering their losses, rather than a celebration.
We began by looking at the withdrawal of troops to Dunkirk prior to the evacuation.

From there we moved through the countryside and into Dunkirk and the War Museum of Operation Dynamo. Operation Dynamo was the British initiative to bring back the British forces from northern France by means of all available shipping, both naval and civilian. There were certain areas that The Daughter (an ambulance technician/student paramedic) was particularly interested in.

And this is de Gaulle's announcement following the fall of France:

From there we went onto the coast and looked down on the Mole, where many of the soldiers waited for the ships to take them off

And the long expanse of beach where the soldiers waded out to the small boats in order to be ferried out to larger vessels to be taken across the Channel

I just watched Mrs. Miniver on Saturday night, and there were some great shots of ships and boats making their way to Dunkirk. They, uh, might have been models, but it still looked pretty impressive to me. Anyway, with that being fresh in my mind, it's great to be able to see some actual photos of the beach and the Mole. I found the photos from the War Museum very interesting as well. There's something rather chilling about de Gaulle's announcement when you know how bad things were going to get.
