Wales - Llanelli Wetland Centre

We visited the Llanelli Wetland Centre which is part of the WWT.  The area was originally the site of steel, tin and coal industries, but following their demise a waterfowl haven was created, which was opened in 1991.  In addition a further wetlands development was opened in 2000 and brings the land back to what it would have been like pre the industrial era.

   

There's plenty of educational elements, including this 'Water Vole City'



And there's a woven hibernaculum for the grass snakes to lay their eggs



There are lots of different ducks and geese:

   

   

And there are flamingos

   

In a beautiful setting



And there are a number of hides giving excellent views of the area

More beautiful photos! :-D It looks like the Llanelli Wetland Centre has come a long way in the last 30+ years. It's wonderful that they were able to return the land to what it was before the industrial era and provide a safe haven for so many different types of wildlife. I love the woven hibernaculum and all your photos of ducks and geese.

Thank you very much. It is good to see the land returned to what it was, rather than simply being left derelict, with so many birds etc able to make use of it.

Will more than one snake lay eggs in there?

Thank you. Yes, it's for grass snakes, which aren't very big. They're the only English snake to lay eggs, the other snake, the adder, incubates their eggs internally.

Yes - non-native, of course! And currently still indoors since we aren't in flamingo weather yet :)
