This is probably slightly premature, but I'm including it because I'm at the beginning of becoming a fan of the Maigret books by Georges Simenon.  I read one of his short stories last Christmas A Maigret Christmas which I enjoyed and then I chose a Maigret novel as part of an Audible two for one offer.  This was Pietr the Latvian, the first in the very long Maigret series.

I really enjoyed it and consequently bought Maigret and the Headless Corpse as this was a new Penguin edition.  Again I enjoyed it and pre-ordered the next new Penguin, plus I've noted there's another one planned for release next year.  I've also added two more Maigret's to my Audible collection.

Why do I like Maigret?  I find that I'm really present in the action - the descriptions mean that I can see what's going on very clearly.  I enjoy the plots and I'm definitely more of a fan of police detectives than amateur detectives (Miss Marple excepted!)  Also, they're not very long which suits me perfectly.

Although I've seen some televised adaptations of Maigret, including the fairly recent one with Rowan Atkinson, I've never got around to reading any of the novels or short stories. I had an uncle who was a big Maigret fan, so I really should read at least some of Georges Simenon's work.

I've read several of the books, and I really enjoy them. And I have a very old "Mrs Maigret's recipe book" cookbook which is totally brilliant.

But that aside, yes, I'd ought to read a Maigret or two once more.
