Dorset Buttons

 I missed last month's Dare to Dabble, as we were on holiday, so was pleased to go this time, when we were making Dorset buttons.

We began with a small metal ring, a sewing needle and our choice of threads:



The ring, as you can see, is slightly smaller in diameter than the length of the needle.  As it turned out I used mostly different threads, as these weren't long enough.

We began by covering the ring in thread, using blanket stitch:



Then we used a different thread to add spokes:



After which we worked round the spokes using backstitch to fill in the gaps:



It takes a long time.  That is the result of slightly over two hours' work.

Yes, I was pleased with how it came out. Just don't think I'll be making any more.

They are. Every so often I had to undo it and have another go. I'm looking forward to trying your buttons now.

It was new to me too. One of the good things about these classes is learning about new things.

Cool button! It's really beautiful and ornate. I love your choice of colours. Saying that, I would imagine that you wouldn't want to make too many of them considering how long it takes, though maybe things go faster once you're more used to the process.

Thank you. It took me ages to choose the colours, and then I had to find slightly different ones to have long enough yarn. I'm not sure how much faster I could get, there's a lot of very small stitches which are always going to take time.
