Stanley Hopkins is a young police inspector who comes under Holmes' influence. He is keen to implement Holmes' methods, although he frequently falls short of the detective's requirements. As well as writing Hopkins in his police role, I quite often show him courting the housemaid at 221B Baker Street.
On learning that Lestrade was heading for the docks, Inspector Hopkins left in a different direction. He reached Covent Garden and saw a distinguished looking gentleman, a purple carnation in his buttonhole.
“I would be grateful if you would accompany me to Scotland Yard,” Hopkins said.
“Why should I?”
“There has been a fire at the docks this morning.”
“There is nothing unusual in that.”
“I believe there is in this particular fire,” Hopkins replied. “And if you are wondering how I came to find you, Mr Holmes said you would be here.”
The man scowled, but accepted Hopkins’ request.
