I like to think of Mrs Hudson as the glue which holds the 221B household together. She puts up with Holmes' experiments and understands the Doctor's early morning departures and returns when called to patients. She deals with various visiting detectives, clients, and various other odd bods and has learnt to see through most of Holmes' disguises, as well as training up a number of housemaids.

Mrs Hudson, like our dear queen, was not amused. She had smelled smoke and rushed up to 221B convinced that once more her curtains were on fire, only to be assured by Dr Watson that Mr Holmes had brought the burnt smell back with him. Then Inspector Lestrade had arrived, bringing with him more smoke smells. Finally Inspector Hopkins had been admitted by Esme, who had been what Mrs Turner called ‘all a-twitter’ until that inspector had relieved her mind by saying he had been nowhere near the fire. In the end, a fairly normal day for the good landlady.
