Three Classic War Films

One of the aims of the tour we've been on was to look at the sites of various classic WWII air war films and get a proper perspective on them.

First of all The Dam Busters

Mohne Dam:



   

and the Eder Dam



   

The Colditz Story



   

Lastly, The Great Escape at Stalag Luft III (Poland)  (No Americans were involved, no motorbikes, no Steve McQueen!)

Colditz and most of the American/UK POW media leans hard into that adventure-style, and Colditz in particular does lend itself well to this, a lot of those escapes are ingenious and daring whether they worked out or not (the glider, that was so brazen!). It's the feel good-side of WW2 media, and it needs that narrow focus to work but it does skew perception unless one makes a point of doing some research.

Definitely. The glider was amazing, if a bit over the top. The films do have to be like that in order to get people to come and see it - which was why the Americans, and Steve McQueen in particular, had to be included - but certainly being there and really thinking about what was going on made a very different impression on me.
