Urinetown: The Musical
Mar. 16th, 2014 11:11 pmYes, you did read the heading correctly. SM and I went to see the musical yesterday and it was brilliant. It's a musical (well, duh) which imagines a world where water is in such short supply that people have to use public conveniences to pee and pay for the privilege. It was absolutely brilliant. The acting was great, the music was excellent, the dancing was wonderful and the stage was amazing.
It's on at the St James Theatre in London and directed by Jamie Lloyd, who directed the James McAvoy production of Macbeth that I saw last year. It's very funny and at the same time quite shocking in parts. Probably not the sort of thing you'd want to take your mother to (if you could get her past the title). Not sure I shall tell my mother either.
We went because I wanted to see Jonathan Slinger, who plays Officer Lockstock, who also acts as the narrator. We weren't really sure what to expect, given both the subject matter and the fact that it is a musical, but on the basis of trying anything once, we went with open minds and proved once more that being adventurous in what we see can be very worthwhile. It completely breaks the fourth wall, as Officer Lockstock explains what's going on and as he agrees with Little Sally, when he's introducing the musical, that one of the things that can put a potential audience off is having an appalling title.
And I am now the proud owner, thanks to SM, of a t-shirt that says "Don't be the bunny".
