“I’m not going on my own; you’ll have to come with me.” Gene looked appealingly at Sam.

“What can have frightened the great Gene Genie?” taunted his DI.

“You’ll understand when you get there,” mumbled the Guv.

“It’s not as if it’s going to be dangerous; there won’t be any blaggers with sawn offs.”

“Believe me, they’d be preferable.”

“Okay then, I’ll come with you, but I still don’t see what all the fuss is about.”

As they walked out of the station Phyllis called out “Good luck, Guv.”  Sam shook his head in disbelief.

They parked round the corner from the church hall and Gene reluctantly got out of the car.  “Come on then,” he ordered.

Sam followed his superior and they joined a group of people congregating in front of the hall door.  Suddenly the door was thrown open and a herd of small girls in brown dresses hurtled out.  Sam instantly decided that discretion was the better part of valour and retreated to the Cortina to wait for Gene.

Shortly afterwards Gene returned accompanied by a small bouncy object that seemed to be chatting nineteen to the dozen.  He unlocked the car and said, “Get in, but don’t touch anything.”

They all got in and Sam looked nervously at the bouncy object, which alien-like had one blue hand and one yellow one.

“We’ve been hand painting,” the alien informed him.

“Didn’t you get told to wash?” Sam asked.

“Yeah, but I forgot.”

Sam and Gene sat in silence whilst Gene drove the blue and yellow handed, brown dress wearing alien to its grandmother’s (Gene’s Aunt Doris).  There wouldn’t have been any point in conversation anyway as the alien didn’t stop talking for the entire journey.

Both gave a sigh of relief as the alien bounced into Aunt Doris’ house and the door shut behind it.

“Next time you have to collect your cousin’s daughter from Brownies, get Chris or Ray to come with you,” Sam pleaded.

“No chance.  They’re even more afraid than I am.”
