Getting Hooked on Hannibal
May. 31st, 2015 04:28 pmAs I said in yesterday's post, my initial attraction to Hannibal was Richard Armitage in the role of Francis Dolarhyde, with the subsequent question of whether I was going to watch. I have friends who rave about the show, so clearly there was something to the programme other than violence and gore. I read Red Dragon and then read the synopsis of the first season. It actually looked interesting, so I decided to order a cheap copy of season one from Ebay and see how I got on; deciding I wasn't enjoy something partway through when I'd only paid five quid for the DVDs didn't seem too bad an idea.
I was hooked and had ordered season two before I'd even finished season one. After which it was a challenge to finish season two before season three started broadcasting. Which I have managed, watching the last two episodes on Thursday evening. It's extremely imaginative and every time I think I know where it's going it jumps sideways - something I really appreciate. Yes, there have been instances when I've fast forwarded the DVD (which have become less over time).
And now I'm really looking forward to season three. I've avidly watched all the promos to prepare. The main question will be, do I let myself get spoilered? NBC start broadcasting next Thursday, the first broadcast in the UK is the following Wednesday. I'm sure there are ways of watching it sooner, but I'm not quite that desperate to watch.
Whichever way I go, it should be interesting. I spent a lot of the first season shouting at Will Graham for doing things he shouldn't be doing and equally shouting at Jack Crawford for failing to do anything about it. Unlike many others I don't ship Will/Hannibal. I know their relationship is complicated and for a while I wondered why the pairing didn't work for me (in the fanfic sense, I can see the canonical part). I realised I like my ships to have both partners equal (which is why when I write Guy/Much, Much is the one with the experience) and there is no way I can see this for Will/Hannibal.
There is an article in The Guardian which speaks about many of the reasons I like this programme, but beware, there are spoilers for seasons one and two.
