But fortunately on different weeks!

Last week the County Guiding first aider came to talk to the Brownies about first aid.  They got to practise putting each other in the recovery position, chest compressions on the Resusci Annie, and how to help someone who is choking.  They learnt to first check for danger, and then see if the casualty is responsive before putting their other skills into action.  Inevitably, some seemed to get along better than others, but hopefully they've all learnt a bit.

This week we went to Tesco's for a pre-Christmas session.  We learnt about the difference between satsumas and clementines, before taking a vote on which the girls preferred.  We decorated a Christingle and I got to make one too.  We then learnt something about ginger, getting to see a ginger root, before eating a small gingerbread person.  The girls were able to decorate to more gingerbread people to take home.

And finally, the donut man had left some doughnuts, which meant each of the Brownies got to take home a doughnut - either one large iced doughnut, or two glazed ring doughnuts - there weren't enough of the iced doughnuts to go round, so after a bit of sorting everyone had the choice they wanted.

So, at the end of the evening, I got to walk through Tesco's carrying two Christingles, followed by a line of Brownies carrying a doughnut in a bag and a paper plate with two decorated gingerbread people, the lady from Tesco's with a shallow box carrying the rest of the Christingles, and Brown Owl bringing up the rear.

What IS the difference between a satsuna and a clementine? Also, I have never heard of a Christingle before, and so just had to look it up. I find it especially interesting that apparently the Christingle originated with the Moravian church in Germany (before coming to England), because my former hometown in Pennsylvania had been founded by Moravians and still had a strong historical presence there. (They would have lit candles at holiday services, but with different Moravian trappings, no Christingles.)

Thank you for sharing this custom with us! You all must have made quite the parade through Tescos! :D
