Miss Marple: A Classic Solution #042 mean

“Of course,” Miss Marple began, “it reminded me of that business with Jackie Chambers.  Such a mean little boy, never wanting to share anything and most unpleasant to the other children.  When the vicar failed to choose him as one of the kings for the Nativity play, he deliberately tore the brightest cloak, because if he wasn’t going to wear it, no-one should.”

“How does that relate to Surkettle?” the inspector asked.

“His behaviour was very much the same.  If Amanda Flyte wouldn’t marry him, then no-one else should have her as their wife.  The other details were simply dressing.”

Julius Caesar: Friends, Romans, Countrymen #095 crowd

Mark Antony surveyed the large crowd gathered before him.  They had listened to Brutus as he had explained how the once great and glorious Julius Caesar was turning into a tyrant; and maybe they believed him.  Antony would like to bet they would reluctantly accept the premise if there were no other, but there would be a sense of disappointment, and a widespread longing for a proper eulogy.  What he needed to do was provide that eulogy and tap into the underlying need to celebrate Caesar, without actively breaking his word to Brutus.  He turned to face them and began.

Needlecraft Mystery (Monica Ferris): The Display #094 collection

Betsy Devonshire looked approvingly at the display she had just arranged.  They were for simple cross-stitch greetings cards, enticing for a beginner.  And since the cards were part of sets, there was the hope that once one had been completed, the sewer would return and purchase the others to complete the collection.  For Betsy was aware that although they were marketed as greetings cards, very few were sent.  It wouldn’t be the first time a collection had been framed and put on display.  And once the bug had been caught, there were lots of more complicated kits she could sell.

Aunt Dimity Series (Nancy Atherton): Reginald #048 turn

Lori Shepherd never questioned why she found Reginald, her pink rabbit, turned to look out of the window, when she had very definitely left him facing the opposite direction.  It had happened so often in the past, she had grown used to it, presuming it had something to do with Reg’s creator, Aunt Dimity.  Instead she would look out of the window and try to discern what it was she was meant to see.  Because whatever was out there would be related to the problem she was seeking to solve.  It just needed her to look from the right angle.

The Lady in the Van: The Question #088 here

“So why is she here?” the social worker asked.

“I said she could park on my drive for a few weeks,” Alan Bennett replied.

“When was that?”

“Oh, ten years’ ago, maybe twelve.”

“And she’s been here ever since?”

“Yes, most of the time.  Her van’s been here, very occasionally she goes off.”

“Where does she go?”

“I don’t know.  I’ve never asked her, and she’s never said.”

“And you’ve never wondered where she goes?”

“Oh, I’ve wondered; I mean it could be anywhere.  But it never seemed appropriate to enquire, so I haven’t.”

“So, why is she really here?”

Wolverine (Stitcher podcast): Ma Roach  #051 cull

Logan had met people like Ma Roach before.  They were determined to exterminate mutants by whatever means possible.  He was equally determined that she shouldn’t be permitted to continue with her cull.  What he hadn’t yet worked out was how she was working with Weapon X, although it gave him a certain grim satisfaction to know that as soon as her usefulness was at an end she would, likewise, be culled.  In the meantime, he had more important matters on his mind, and he was determined to find Maureen, wherever she might be.  They continued their exploration of the bayou.

Jackman & Evans series: The Suspect #053 arrested

DI Rowan Jackman looked at the man seated opposite him in the interview room.  “You understand why you’ve been arrested?” he asked.

“Oh, yes.”  The man smirked and sent another shiver down Jackman’s spine.  There was something very strange going on; it was as if he had wanted to be arrested.

Jackman glanced across at DS Marie Evans, who gave a small shake of her head.  She was clearly of the same opinion.

Jackman thought and then said, “We won’t be opposing bail.”

“But you can’t,” the man blurted out.

“Oh, can’t we?  Would you like to tell me why?”

The Taking of Annie Thorne (C J Tudor): Teaching English #046 work

It might not be Joe Thorne’s first choice of work but teaching English in a Botswana school wasn’t a bad way to earn a living.  There were still the class clowns who sat at the back, but for the most part he was actually enjoying teaching Shakespeare.  Currently there was a lively discussion about children from different tribes being allowed to marry, and the reaction of various heads of households if they heard about it.  Then the bell rang, and his class instantly stood and left with a chorus of ‘Goodbye, sir’.  Some things were the same the world over.

Thomas the Tank Engine: Day Trippers #058 late

The Fat Controller was cross; Thomas was late.

When Thomas finally puffed into the station, the Fat Controller was holding his large pocket watch and looking very pointedly at it.

“I’m sorry I’m late, sir, but the cows had got out of their field and strayed onto the railway line.  We had to wait for the farmer to herd them back.  The farmer said someone must have left the gate open.”

“I expect it was the day trippers,” the Fat Controller said.  “I shall put up a notice reminding our passengers to make sure they close farm gates in future.”

Cabin Pressure: Practice Makes … #071 ground

“Arthur, why are you gyrating in that peculiar fashion?” Carolyn demanded.

“You said I needed to practice reassuring the passengers when we’re experiencing turbulence, so I’m imagining what it’s like, because we’re not in the air, but on the ground,” Arthur replied.

“Which is probably just as well, since the pilots are pretending to be the concerned passengers and not actually piloting the plane,” Douglas commented.

“But are you feeling reassured?” Arthur asked.

“Not really,” Martin said.  He was currently wearing the meal Arthur had been serving at the point the hypothetical turbulence had begun.

“I’ll keep practicing.”

Everyone groaned.
