Having had a couple of nights in Bridlington, we moved onto Beverley.

On the way we stopped in Rudston, so SM could visit Winifred Holtby's grave in the village churchyard:

From there we went to Burton Agnes Hall.

Unlike Sewerby Hall, this is still lived in by the family, and I felt it was far more interesting.  The rooms combined furniture from different periods, both items which had been bought at the time of manufacture and items bought later at auction, including the queen's bed which came from Sewerby Hall.

In the early 1900s the owner at the time had started to buy a number of paintings, including by the Impressionists and artists such as Gauguin and Renoir.  He had not specifically chosen works for their value, but bought ones he liked.  I thought he had good taste.  There were a few paintings by Duncan Grant, who was the lover of Vanessa Bell, and part of the Bloomsbury set.  The first two pictures are his paintings, the last I simply liked:

Again the gardens were lovely, although this time there was more a jumble of plants mixed in together:

The Hall was built between 1601 and 1610.  Before that the owners had lived in the Norman manor house, which was built about 1173, and part of this is still in the grounds:

In the church there is an effigy of one of the inhabitants of the manor house from around 1340.

It was a fascinating place to visit, one I would recommend to anyone who happens to be in the area.

Another lovely location.

MG can never get over the things that are just hanging on the walls in stately home tours. :D
