Yes Minister: The Minister’s Decision #092 sanction
“Whether we should sanction the request or not is of course entirely the Minister’s decision,” Sir Humphrey Appleby said. “He is the one who will be answerable for the consequences and any further dilemmas which might make an appearance should he choose to approve or negate what is to all intents and purposes possibly a minor decision and yet one upon which much may rest.” He paused for a breath but continued before anyone could manage an interjection. “It is possible were I in the Minister’s position I would indeed sanction it, but there are a number of cons as well as the perhaps insurmountable pros, which might be against it. Therefore, I would hesitate to venture my opinion.”
“What is he talking about, Bernard?” Jim Hacker asked.
“He says it’s up to you whether you call for coffee now or later, but he’d prefer it now,” Bernard Woolley replied.
Allo Allo: Just a Normal Day at Café Rene #050 kitchen
“We can’t put the airmen in the kitchen,” Rene Artois pointed out. “Because there are already three members of the communist resistance in there, pretending to be brushes and mops.”
“Well, they have to go somewhere,” Michelle, of the Resistance, insisted.
Rene sighed. “I suppose they might fit under the bed of my wife’s mother.”
“No, Rene,” Yvette said hurriedly. “Don’t forget that’s where we hid Lt Gruber after he was knocked out by the drug meant for Herr Flick of the Gestapo.”
“They’ll have to go outside as onion sellers. Hopefully this time no-one tries to buy any onions.”
Sanditon: Observations #037 morning
“Good morning, Mr Parker, I hardly expected you to be present at this time,” Charlotte Heywood said.
“Really, Miss Heywood, and what gives you the ability to predict the times of my appearance?” Sidney Parker replied.
“I should have expected you to need more sleep to recover from your drinking last night.”
“Indeed. Perhaps if you had paid more attention to your own affairs, rather than being overly pre-occupied by those of others you would not have misplaced your gloves.”
He passed the gloves over to Charlotte, who blushed. “It is most kind of you to return them to me.”
King Lear: Her Last Opportunity #099 unless
Lear glared at Cordelia. Up to now she had been his favourite daughter, the one who had seemed closest to him, who he had thought loved him the most. He had pinned his hopes on her; planned to give her, and her husband, the best part of his kingdom. But now she was refusing to say what he was longing to hear. In an instant his love turned to hate.
“Unless you profess your love for me, in the manner of your sisters, you will receive nothing,” Lear declared.
She remained silent, and he turned away from her in disgust.
North and South: By The Sea #089 heart
“Would you like to walk along the beach?” John Thornton asked his wife. “You must say ‘no’ if you would prefer to rest on one of the benches.”
“Well, I am in no position to run were the sea coming in, but the tide is well out, so I would very much like to.” Margaret placed a hand on her belly. “And I believe your son agrees with me from the way he is currently kicking.”
“It may yet be my daughter.”
“Would you mind if it were?”
“Not at all. Boy or girl I shall be equally happy.”
Thornton helped his wife down the steps, and they walked a little way along the sand. Occasionally Margaret pointed out a shell, and her husband would pick it up and present it to her.
“I shall use them to create a picture,” she said.
Suddenly Thornton stopped and picked up a piece of driftwood.
“What are you planning on doing with that?” Margaret asked.
Thornton smiled and began to draw in the sand. Margaret laughed as she realised he was drawing a heart.
“This heart will not survive the return of the sea,” Thornton said, “But you have my heart forever.”
Robin Hood (BBC): In A Pool #069 wallow
“Do you intend to wallow in that pool all afternoon?” Guy called out.
“And why not?” Much shouted back. “It’s too hot in the sun and this pool is blissfully cool. You should join me.”
“You know I dislike being immersed in water.”
“What, like this?” Much demonstrated by disappearing beneath the surface.
“Exactly!”
“How would it be if I taught you how to swim? I promise to hold onto you all the time.”
“I suppose I could try it,” Guy said a little dubiously.
Slowly, he began to get undressed, and Much floated on his back and watched appreciatively.
Grantchester: Theology Students #097 graduate
Leonard Finch looked at the enthusiastic young men who had arrived in Cambridge, ready to study theology. He wondered how many of them would be as enthusiastic by the time they came to graduate. The course would do more than provide them with facts, it would give them the opportunity to examine themselves and see how their professed beliefs stood up to this examination.
For some he knew it would be difficult. He hoped they would be ones who, knowing their own weaknesses, would then undertake a pastoral role with a far greater understanding of the needs of their congregation.
Forever: #078 lighting
“I remember when electric lighting in a private house was a novelty,” Henry Morgan began.
Abe Morgan rolled his eyes at Jo Martinez and said in a quavering voice, “You youngsters don’t appreciate your good fortune. In my day we were fortunate when we had oil lamps.”
Jo laughed and looked at the candle which was currently burning on the table. “I suppose we should be grateful for candlelight, given the current power outage,” she said.
“Please don’t encourage him,” Abe replied. “Or we’ll have a complete history lesson.”
“How else were you planning to pass the time?” Henry said.
