Another Badge Earned
Mar. 13th, 2020 10:47 amLast week was World Book Day, and since most of the Brownies had worn costumes to school they were allowed to continue wearing them to Brownies. Several from Harry Potter, various Alice in Wonderlands etc, even a Golden Ticket from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. They played a book quiz: Which came first the book or the film? And made bookmarks.
We finished with an enrolment for four new Brownies. One of the girls was so upset, because she thought she wouldn't remember the promise, despite our reassurances that the whole pack would say it with her, that Flamingo and I had to take her hands to lead her round. She managed to say her promise very quietly as we all said it. I'm delighted with the other girls because, although there were a few curious looks, none of them made any comments, they're a very supportive group.
This week we did the final explore skills builder - talking about a visit to a city. And then we made some cardboard snow goggles, which were theoretically quite easy, but required careful cutting and tying knots in wool ...
Ten girls who had completed all five skills builders were then presented with their badge. We always run a 'catch up' week for those who've missed something.

That final explore skills builder sounds really cool. It's great that ten girls earned their badges after completing all five skills builders. :-)

Date: 2020-03-15 03:14 pm (UTC)World Book Day dressing up is a bit of a sore point with my daughter and some of her friends - thinking of costumes for WBD and also for Halloween can be quite a problem for many parents, especially if they have more than one child (and especially for one who is a secondary teacher and runs out of time as well as patience). I'm glad you let them wear the outfits for Brownies - at least that extended their use! And it obviously fed into the activity on book/film order, which by the way, is a really interesting one. I wonder how many got it all right?

Date: 2020-03-15 03:48 pm (UTC)Yes - not to mention the cost for people now, because most costumes are bought. At least when mine were of that age it was a case of finding what we had available. And my son had a red and black Dennis the Menace striped jumper I'd knitted for him (because he wanted one anyway) which he wore for three successive years, and then went down to his sister for Minnie the Minx!
